Super Saturday Update

Posted February 14, 2020

Horizons continues to reach local children during the school year and just wrapped up the Virginia Beach Super Saturday reading program. Over 135 volunteers donated 210+ hours of service to the children of Diamond Springs Elementary.  An average of 25 students attended each Saturday morning session with 38 different children in attendance at least twice (which is double last year’s numbers!).  Each week, students spent a half hour reading with a community volunteer. Then another 1.5 hours in targeted small group reading instruction with their teachers and other volunteers.  Participating students received breakfast and a snack each day along with a book to take home and add to their personal library.

Special thanks to REACH  and the Interact Club of Kempsville High School for donating books! Horizons Hampton Roads could not service these grateful children of Diamond Springs Elementary without the dedicated team of loyal volunteers from Catholic High School who have been assisting our students and programs for 4 consecutive years. We also want to recognize and thank the Noblemen for providing attendance prizes for the children.

Volunteer groups this year included:
Catholic High School

Dare Strategists

First Colonial

GS Troop 191

Horizons Ambassadors and Board Member Arielle Hankerson

Kempsville Interact Club

Churchland Kiwanis

Virginia Beach Lions Clubs

Norfolk Academy

Virginia Beach Rotary

United Way Women United

Priority Charity Bowl

Each Saturday, there was lots of excitement amongst the children as they waited for the community volunteers to read one-on-one together. One student who only spoke Spanish connected with a Catholic High School volunteer that happens to teach Spanish! The student’s Diamond Springs teacher said watching her student with the volunteer reader was the most animated she had ever seen her student. Impacting the lives of children to give them confidence and share the love of learning is what it’s all about. Huge Horizons thank you to all our compassionate volunteers. Together we are inspiring minds, building community, and transforming lives!
